Choosing To Complete My Education

Pros And Cons Of Hiring A Private Tutor For The MCAT

If you want to apply to medical school, one of the first things you'll need to do is take the MCAT. This is not an easy exam, and your score will play a huge role in determining where you'll be accepted to medical school. So, it is definitely worth your while to prepare carefully and thoroughly for the MCAT. Many people choose to hire a private MCAT tutor to help prepare for the exam, but this approach has both pros and cons.

Tutoring Pro: Scheduling is flexible.

If you decide to attend an MCAT prep class, scheduling is not very flexible. Classes are held at certain times, and you're expected to be there. If you miss class, there's really not a chance to make up for that missed opportunity. Working with a private tutor, on the other hand, is more flexible. You can more easily schedule sessions around work and your other obligations, since it's only you and the tutor. If something comes up at the last minute and you need to reschedule, your tutor will likely be able to work with you.

Tutoring Pro: You get a personalized approach.

When you hire a tutor, they can tailor their methods to suit your needs. If you are a visual learner, they can use more visual techniques in helping you study. If you learn better when you hear information, they may be able to lecture you or discuss material with you. Prep classes tend to combine methods to cater to a vast array of students, so you may not learn as much material as quickly in a class as with a tutor.

Tutoring Con: You need to find a tutor you get along with.

Since you work more closely with a tutor than you do with a general instructor, you need to make sure you get along well with the tutor you hire. If not, the sessions may not be as productive. Always meet with a few private tutors before selecting the one you like best.

Tutoring Con: Tutoring can be more expensive.

Since you are paying for someone's one-on-one time, tutoring is often more expensive than attending an MCAT prep class with other students. The extra cost will be worth it if the tutoring enables you to get a better score and get accepted to medical school, but on the other hand, if you are someone who has always learned well in class with little outside help, you may not need to pay the extra cost for tutoring.
